Ken Tyrrell - Founder and President

Why did I start PowerU?

As a parent of 3 and lifelong coach of kids, I am

frustrated with the current landscape of youth sports

today where kids are over scheduled, over structured

and have little to no time to play with their friends.

Remember when kids simply went outside and played with

their friends? As we all know, free play is not only fun for kids, but also where our kids develop socially and emotionally.

To that end, I wanted to create an afterschool enrichment program for kids where physical activity and leadership themes are used to help kids develop socially and emotionally and where kids develop a path to their leadership potential.

A program that helps kids by focusing on:

  • Physical Activity

  • PowerU Program

  • Leadership skills

  • Collaborating with parents to work on targeted areas

Now, after 17 plus years of coaching and a long stint in corporate america, I am pursuing my passion.

Coach John Jenkins

Founder and President - Just for Kids DC

Coach John Jenkins grew up in Wyckoff,

New Jersey, a small town where there

were ample places to run, play and

work off some energy.

John started his journey by getting his Personal Training Certificate and becoming a P.T. at Georgetown’s Definitions Gym. While getting himself into tip-top shape, he realized there was a need for children to be taught the importance of being physically fit at an early age.

John’s wife Annie came on board in summer 2006 as a swim instructor and yoga instructor. Annie is a Budding Yogi certified yoga instructor and shares her husbands passion for fitness. Since 2006, they have collaboratively been adding classes and seeing more than 400 kids a week.

Over a thousand children have participated in Just for Kids programs since its creation in September of 2002, and Coach John hopes to see many more! He knows that an active child is a happier, healthier child!

Gina Tyrrell

Gina has worked for 16 years in the

Washington, D.C. area in the Defense

sector as an engineer and project manager.

During that time Gina also volunteered in

various programs to tutor children in

everything from elementary age math, to high school chemistry. Watching the "light bulb" come on when kids are striving to learn, is one of the most rewarding moment to experience with a child.  More recently she started and ran her own personal concierge business while keeping up with their three children: Kyle 11, Josh 8, and Abby 8 years old.

Volunteering at their kids' school, and helping with the various teams and kids' activities has been the greatest joy for her. Being with children, helping them with the little issues of life as well as celebrating kids' little successes, is a passion for her. Bringing that experience and joy to the aftercare program will be a win-win for both Gina and the children.
